John W. Martin
John W. Martin is the inventor and designer of TracTop™, a retractable, telescoping, pickup truck cap, and several companion products. He has developed a Collapsible Vehicle Enclosure product line that has adaptations for all automotive lines, military, sport utility, marine, and trailer vehicles.
Development of the TracTop product led to other inventions such as a customized rear seating apparatus, auto side body protection, and canopies for luxury fishing and cruising yachts. An ongoing love of automobiles led to the design and style of several speedster, runabout, and roadster car concepts.
John W. Martin holds a Master of Science degree in Engineering Design and an Education Specialist degree from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He served in the US Army in Japan, Korea and Vietnam attaining the rank of Major. He had nine years employment with several automotive companies, General Motors, Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Corporation, and Bricklin Motors. His job description ranged from Design Illustrator to Product Design Engineer.
John’s experience in design led to a design and consulting business catering to the automotive companies, 3M, and major advertising agencies; other concentrations included residential and commercial architectural design—especially lake front and luxury residences, a shopping center, subdivision, and interior and exterior renovation.
John is retired from the position of senior instructor in the Commercial Art/Technical Illustration Program at Washtenaw Community College in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was hired to develop and institute this program based on his education and experience in the design engineering, illustration, and product development fields. He served in this position for twenty eight years with additional part-time instruction following retirement. Prior to his employment at Washtenaw Community College, John taught in similar programs at McComb Community College, Henry Ford Community College, and Wayne State University.
Judith Tyler Martin has a degree in Commercial Art, with additional University study in the disciplines of Psychology, Fine Arts, and Education. She successfully owned an advertising marketing studio before joining a partnership with John Martin to form Leo Associates Design Studio. Currently she blends this partnership position with free-lance editing, graphic design, and consultation. She taught part-time in the Graphic Design Program at Washtenaw Community College. Judith was president and creative director of Lightform, Incorporated, a company that specialized in graphic design, computer-generated slide presentations, computer-generated video animation and production.
Judith served on the Advisory Board to the Graphic Design Program at the Jackson Career Center, Jackson, MI, and served as a director on the Board of TracTop International Incorporated. She is a charter member and served as Advisor on the Board of the Inventor’s Council of Michigan. In that capacity, Judith initiated and presented two Invention Expositions at the facitities of Domino Farms. She continues to serve as counselor and mentor to product developers and inventors.
Among her design specialties are trade-show displays, computer generated graphics, print media, corporate image packages, prototype construction, direction of multi-media presentations including video animation and visuals for new product development. Judith’s most recent project involves consultation and design of a series of commemorative plates featuring illustrations of University of Michigan landmarks and other designs for Classic Collegiate China Co. of Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Judith is Founding President of Lagotto Club of America. She is currently serving on the Health/Education Committee.
Judith is co-inventor with John Martin of TracTop retractable pick up truck cap and co-inventor on updated products in Collapsible Vehicle Enclosure.
